French Press vs. Drip Coffee: Why I Stick With Drip

Written by Daniel Norris | Mar 11, 2025 2:34:01 AM

I’ve tried just about every way to make coffee—French press, AeroPress, pour-over, you name it. But at the end of the day, I keep coming back to drip coffee for my daily pour, especially with a machine like the Moccamaster.

I know French press has its fans, my wife and I used one for years in Australia, but here’s why I think drip is the better choice in the end.

1. Drip Coffee Is More Reliable

French press is great—when everything goes right. But it’s easy to mess up. The wrong grind, the wrong steep time, or even pressing too fast can throw off the whole cup.

With a quality drip machine like the Moccamaster, you get the right water temperature, proper extraction, and an even brew every single time. No guesswork, no surprises—just consistently good coffee.

2. A Cleaner, Smoother Cup

French press coffee always leaves behind sediment and extra oils, which can make the last sip a bit… chewy. If you love that, great. But I prefer a clean, smooth cup without the grit.

Drip coffee makers use paper filters that remove fine particles and excess oils, giving you a balanced, crisp brew.

3. Drip Coffee Is Just Easier

Making a French press requires multiple steps and precise timing. A Moccamaster? Grind, add, press a button. It takes care of the details while you get on with your morning.

And if you’re brewing for multiple people, forget about doing batch after batch with a French press—a good drip machine makes several cups at once with zero hassle.

4. The Best Flavor Without the Work

A Moccamaster brews at the ideal temperature (195-205°F) and evenly saturates the grounds for a well-balanced extraction. Pair that with freshly ground, high-quality beans, and you get better coffee than a French press—without the extra effort.

Final Thoughts

French press is fine for a lazy weekend, but for everyday coffee that’s consistent, clean, and hassle-free, drip coffee is the way to go.

If you want great coffee with minimal effort, a Moccamaster is worth it.
